About
Hi, I'm Ioana.
PhD researcher · University lecturer · Nominated for a faculty teaching award three years running · Enhanced DBS-checked
Maths has always been the subject I found intriguing. Not as a set of formulas to memorise and apply, but as something you can take apart, rebuild, and play with. Where you deduce a result rather than recite it, and where one idea quietly explains a dozen others. Once you see maths that way, it stops being something to fear and becomes a way of looking at the world. What I love about tutoring is sharing this passion and aiming for that moment a student stops being scared of a topic and starts being curious about it instead.
I've been teaching one-to-one lessons since 2022, from KS3 through to A-level. Alongside my tutoring, I'm a PhD researcher in informatics and a lecturer in engineering at King's College London, where I've been nominated for a faculty teaching award three years running. I see my job as creating a space where students feel confident to attempt, to be wrong, and to refine. I'll meet you where you are, build a plan around your goals, and adapt as you do. When a student is stuck, I won't just hand them the answer. I'll ask questions to help them think through what comes next on their own, and if they're still stuck after a few prompts, I'll suggest the next step and give them some space to figure it out.
Outside the classroom
When I'm not teaching, I'm somewhere with my camera. Recently: Mt Meru in Tanzania, safari in Kenya, the beaches of Zanzibar, island-hopping across Indonesia, and Algeria for the famously sweet Deglet Nour dates as much as the people who shared them. The other half of me is at home, baking, cooking, painting.

Common questions.
- What platform are lessons on?
- Google Meet. You'll get a link in your confirmation email and a calendar invite.
- What does my child need for a lesson?
- A notebook, pen or tablet, and a quiet space with decent internet. A calculator if their exam board allows one. I'll send the notes from our lesson afterwards, in case they missed something or want to review.
- Can parents sit in?
- Of course. Different students settle in differently: some prefer to work independently, others prefer to have someone with them. You're welcome whenever.
- Are you DBS-checked?
- Yes, I'm Enhanced DBS-checked. Happy to share the certificate on request.
- How does rescheduling work?
- Every booking confirmation includes reschedule and cancel links. The cut-off is 24 hours before the lesson, but life happens, so I'm flexible where needed. As much notice as you can manage is appreciated.
- Do you set homework between lessons?
- When it helps. I'll suggest targeted practice based on what we've covered and what's coming up. If you'd prefer I set structured homework every week, just let me know.
- What if it isn't the right fit?
- That's exactly what the free 15-minute consultation is for. If we're not a good match, or you change your mind, I'll happily point you towards someone who might be.
